You steal a glance
I do the same.
Our eyes, they speak
Not a word was said.
Now my heart is aflutter
In silence it wakes.
The moment, you notice
As you slowly glance away.
Alas, the damage has been done
My heart is awake.
For you smile a little
I do the same.

The Melody
The feeling was surreal.
If you have ever been on a roller coaster ride then you know the feeling of absolute rush and fear, filling your body, as you realize that you have no control over the situation that is taking place.
It was the same feeling.
The first thing that I heard was the hum. A beautiful melody that I had heard many times before. Her voice was beautiful and the melody mournful, but I had never seen her. There was no face, no shapes other than the black mass that accompanied the melody.
I woke up.
As my eyes adjusted to the darkness the only fleeting light that filtered through the window, on the left side of my bed, was from the street lamp outside. Piercing rays that filtered through the window shutter, creating layers of light, illuminating the foot of my bed. I tried to move to close the shutter and that was when I heard the hum again.
Mournful, haunting and beautiful. It seemed to be coming from the foot of my bed. This was no dream. I tried to move my hand to pinch my self but to no avail. It was then that I realized that my body was frozen. Paralyzed.
I tried to scream, shout. Nothing. Move my hands, move my legs. Nothing. Nothing!
All the while the humming seemed to be getting closer to me. The melody that haunted me in my dreams seemed to have come alive in my reality. I could feel goosebumps ripple through my body as my breaths sharpened.
Then the black mass appeared at the foot of my bed accompanied by the melody. I could feel the chill run down my spine. The layers of light seemed to help illuminate it as it moved bringing darkness to the spots that she touched.
"Who are you?" I screamed but no sound issued forth. Only silence. The black mass continued to move with her melody. Why could I not speak or move? Why could I do nothing about the situation that was unfolding in front of me?
As the black mass reached my upper body I could feel the pressure building upon my chest. It was as if someone was sitting down on it. My breathes came in sharp and short measures. Strangely, at the same time, I felt a calmness descend upon my body. It was as if the black mass was slowly descending upon my chest and soothing me with her melody. My breathing seemed to be back to normal and a sense of relief washed over me.
Then I heard my own heart beat. Lub-dub. Lub-dub. Lub-dub. Fast paced, at first, but gradually slowing down at the black mass descended toward my heart where it stopped and so did her melody.
Lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub.
Was it hearing what I was hearing? The beat of my heart? Who was she? These unanswered questions flashed through my head like bolts of lightening as I tried to move my body to no avail. She must have felt my efforts because she started to move towards my face as I felt the pressure lift from my chest. The haunting melody started again.
Then she was in front of my face. I was staring into darkness. No shape, no features. Nothing. Just the melody.
I felt no fear, no terror. The calmness and relief that had washed over me seemed to bring about a little courage within me.
I wanted to ask her if she was the one who hummed the haunting melody and the one who had visited me only in my dreams but I could utter no sound or movement.
I wanted to grasp her face where I imagined it would be. To see a face, a shape, some kind of feature. I wanted to solve the mystery behind her haunting melody and visits to me. It was then that I felt my fingers move.
Like a captive breaking free of the chains, my hands snapped from the sides, where it had laid paralyzed a second ago, as I reached out for her but she was gone.
I sat in my bed grasping at darkness. No melody, no black mass. Just silence. She was gone just like she had appeared.
The street lamp shining the layers of light in my room seemed to have gone off. Nothing just total darkness and silence.
I wondered what she wanted from me, the reasons for her visits and the story behind the melody that she hummed. Maybe, I will never know the answer, maybe, I will. All I knew was she had become a reality.
The first contact had been made.
